Structure sits at the centre of the work.
The practice
Content, hierarchy, and interface are developed patiently — from a considered starting point through to clear, build‑ready systems. The emphasis is not on tools or platforms, but on how digital work is organised, understood, and brought into form.
SF Generator is a design‑led systems practice focused on defining digital structure — shaping how content is arranged, how information flows, and how systems are communicated and used in practice.
The work is grounded in clarity, restraint, and an understanding of how digital systems are implemented and evolve over time.
How the practice operates
The practice
The practice works at the intersection of design thinking and implementation.
This approach ensures that systems are not only conceptually sound, but practical to deliver — balancing intent with real‑world constraints across platforms, content systems, and environments.
The focus is on defining systems that hold up — structurally, operationally, and over time.
Stephen Franklin
Founder & Principal
Stephen Franklin is the Founder and Principal of SF Generator, with over 30 years’ experience in digital and design work spanning early web systems through to contemporary platform‑based environments.
He works directly within the practice, defining system structure, guiding decision-making, and maintaining accountability across all work delivered under SF Generator.
His role is not to produce output in isolation, but to ensure that digital systems are clearly structured, coherent, and aligned with how they are intended to operate.
Stephen’s experience spans independent projects, studio environments, and collaborative work alongside agencies and technical teams.
Practice context and relationship
SF Generator operates alongside Stephen Franklin Design and SF Mediator as part of a clearly defined studio structure.
Design work originating in Stephen Franklin Design is given structure and form through SF Generator, while ongoing responsibility for stability, hosting, and continuity is managed through SF Mediator.
This separation allows each practice to remain focused:
• Design defines direction
• Systems define structure
• Continuity ensures stability over time
Collected digital works
A curated collection of earlier digital projects is available as a reference to Stephen Franklin’s long-standing engagement with digital systems and web-based work.
While produced prior to current frameworks and technologies, these works provide historical context for the practice and its approach to structure, communication, and system design.
